About this work
The drawing shows the head and shoulders of a young girl with a blunt dark fringe and hair gathered back, her eyes lowered and lips slightly pursed as she looks off to one side. Her collar and shoulders are suggested with loose, unfinished lines, while the face is worked in far greater detail and finish.
Worked in soft pencil on toned paper, the drawing builds form through fine cross-hatching and smudged shading concentrated on the hair and features, leaving the clothing and background as light, gestural strokes. The contrast between the finished face and sketch-like surroundings gives the study a quiet, focused, contemplative feel.
