About this work
A bleached, branching piece of driftwood lies wedged among a dense field of water-worn stones, its roots and forked limbs breaking the surface of a shallow, fast-moving stream. The composition is cropped close, filling the sheet edge to edge with rounded rocks of many sizes and the pale, foaming current threading between them.
Thick, visible strokes of oil paint in muted greys, ochres, and dusty blues capture the wet sheen of the stones and the milky, light-filled water. The high-angle viewpoint and dense, textured brushwork give the small scene a tactile, almost abstract rhythm, evoking the steady murmur of the current over stone.
