About this work
An apartment building with rows of small lit windows stands lit up in bright orange-yellow, cut diagonally by a wedge of shadow, while neighboring walls in deep crimson and maroon recede into darkness. Above, the sky is an almost solid dark green-black mass of cloud. In the lower foreground, two bare tree trunks rise from a strip of dim green ground.
The palette is built almost entirely from saturated reds, oranges, and near-black darks, the glowing facade laid in thick, textured strokes against the flat, brooding sky. The stark contrast between illuminated wall and surrounding gloom gives the scene a tense, theatrical charge, as though caught in a sudden break of light after a storm.
