About this work
A vast dark thundercloud fills the upper two-thirds of the canvas, a single white bird gliding beneath it. Below stretches a long, pale stone embankment wall running along a river, punctuated by a warning road sign and topped by a distant line of buildings and a small tree.
The sky is painted in deep blue-greys, softly blended to suggest rolling storm cloud, set against the flat, sunlit cream of the embankment. A decorative iron railing in the foreground anchors the empty composition, and the sharp light-dark contrast gives the cityscape a dramatic, charged calm after a storm.
