About this work
Heavy, billowing clouds fill nearly two-thirds of the canvas, their masses rolling above a straight dirt road that narrows toward a distant village. Striped green and tan fields flank the road on both sides, and a dense huddle of trees and low white cottages marks the horizon where the road disappears.
Broad, energetic strokes build the volume and movement of the clouds in cool grays and whites, set against the warmer greens and ochres of the land below. The strong contrast between heavy sky and sunlit earth, along with the loose, gestural brushwork overhead, gives the scene a restless, dramatic charge just after a storm.
