About this work
Two women dominate the foreground, one in a green-yellow headscarf with a lace-wrapped vessel balanced on her head, the other beside her wearing a beaded white headpiece; both face toward the viewer at close range. Behind them a sunlit street recedes past sand-colored houses, a slender minaret, and small figures with a pack animal walking further down the lane.
Thick impasto in ochre, gold, and warm brown builds the sunlit walls and figures, while deep terracotta and olive shadows give the scene warmth and weight. Textured, heavily worked paint and a low, warm light lend the street an earthy, timeless genre-scene atmosphere.
