About this work
Three women stand close together in conversation, dressed in patterned wraps of pink, orange, green and white with scarves covering their hair; one balances a woven basket on her head while another carries a woven bag by its handle. A small child in blue stands at the edge holding a woman's orange skirt, and a fourth, more loosely painted figure appears at right, against a bare ochre backdrop.
Warm ochres and ochre-golds dominate the ground and background, offset by the women's brighter patterned clothing in coral, teal and lilac. Brushwork is loose and painterly, with forms built from broad strokes and soft edges rather than sharp outlines, giving the gathering a relaxed, sunlit, everyday feel.
