About this work
A huge red-pink maple leaf is suspended at the center of the composition, framed above and to the sides by two curved, dark antler- or horn-like forms studded with rows of dark hollow openings resembling teeth, together suggesting an open jaw or skull. Below, a flock of small dark birds scatters through the air above a flowering bush and a hazy strip of distant blue-toned landscape.
The palette shifts from the leaf's saturated crimson, magenta and orange to soft grey-blue and lilac in the surrounding atmosphere, with the horn shapes painted in warm ochre and brown. Brushwork is loose and blended in the sky, more textured and defined in the leaf's veins and the horns' ridged surface. The juxtaposition of organic decay and skeletal form creates an unsettling, dreamlike mood.
