About this work
Four figures stand against a mottled crimson wall. At right a fourth woman, seen from behind, turns her head toward the group.
Thick impasto strokes build the orange and burgundy clothing while faces are modeled more smoothly. The deep red ground opens onto a pale, loosely sketched doorway at right, giving the composition a shallow spatial pause. Warm earth tones and heavy brushwork lend the scene an intimate, somber weight.
