About this work
Three separate portrait studies are inset side by side into rectangular cutouts cut through a raw, distressed panel painted in ochre and gold. On the left a middle-aged woman gazes out with a level, tired expression; in the center a fair-haired youth looks straight ahead with parted lips; on the right a bearded older man meets the viewer's eyes under furrowed brows. Together the three heads read as generations of one family, isolated within the aged, scuffed surround.
Each face is built with dense, opaque flesh tones - ochres, dull pinks and cool grey-green shadows - rendered with tight, blended brushwork typical of academic figure study, while the surrounding board is left roughly scraped and streaked, exposing bare wood tones and drips. The contrast between the polished, lifelike heads and the raw, unfinished frame gives the piece a fragmentary, archival feel, as though three individual likenesses were mounted together.
