About this work
A dense mass of dark blue-green foliage fills most of the composition, its heavily worked surface broken by small clusters of glowing red and orange marks scattered like sparks among the trees. To the right, the canopy opens onto a paler passage of grey-blue sky and pale rock; below, a strip of deep blue water reflects small red highlights near the shore.
Built up in thick, textured layers of green, blue and near-black, the painting sets the muted woodland mass against isolated hot accents of orange and red, echoing the title's festive glow glimpsed through trees. Brushwork stays loose and encrusted, light sources left ambiguous, and the nocturnal palette with its scattered glow creates a hushed, mysterious atmosphere.
