About this work
A pale nude figure reclines diagonally across a white sheet, one arm raised behind her head, the other resting near two pears and a lime at the picture's edge. A folded fan patterned with pink blossoms is held up to partly cover her face, and her long black hair, fastened with a floral pin, streams down beside a pale patterned cloth.
The figure is rendered in flat, cool grey tones against a deep maroon ground inscribed with rows of Japanese-style characters, the fan's warm pinks the only bright accent. Forms are simplified and smoothly modeled with little shading, the graphic calligraphy and patterned textiles giving the composition a quiet, decorative stillness with an East Asian sensibility.
