About this work
Several birch trunks, their bark patched with snow and pale lichen, rise in the foreground of a winter forest. Behind them a dense wall of dark spruce and pine trunks forms a near-black backdrop, pierced by warm slivers of low sunlight glowing between the trunks. Snow blankets the ground and clings to the birches' lower branches.
The palette moves from cool grey-white bark and blue-shadowed snow to warm gold and rose light glowing in the gaps between the dark trees. Strokes are dense and textured in the shadowed pines, softer and blended in the glowing sky slivers and snow. The strong light-dark contrast and hushed stillness give the scene a quiet, mysterious depth.
