About this work
Two or three moored sailing yachts sit low in the water at the center of the composition, their masts and thin rigging rising as dark verticals against a soft, glowing sky. A faint pale flare of light breaks through the haze behind them, and the calm water beneath mirrors the vessels and the warm atmosphere.
The whole scene is painted in a narrow range of ochre, sepia and warm grey, with the forms dissolved into soft, smeared passages of pigment. Edges are blurred and the palette almost monochrome, evoking dusk or misty evening light. The loose, tonal handling gives the etude a quiet, mysterious, atmospheric mood.
