About this work
A woman in a pale blouse and dark full skirt, her hair bound in a netted snood, stands in profile beside a tall metal contraption topped with a stylized bird's head and articulated wing parts, its strings running down toward her raised hand. Colorfully striped reed-like stems grow up around her feet, and handwritten English verses are inscribed across the aged, parchment-colored background alongside a title and signature.
The palette is limited to warm sepia and ochre tones, broken by the cool blue accents of her sleeves and the striped reeds, giving the surface the look of aged paper. Fine, graphic linework and flat modeling replace painterly texture, and the inscribed poem about absence and longing reinforces a wistful mood within an inventive, surreal tableau.
