About this work
A slender woman is shown from the waist up in strict profile, gazing to the left, her hair gathered into a loose bun. She wears a garment draped off one shoulder, and both arms stretch forward to rest on an unseen ledge, hands relaxed and slightly open; small preparatory sketches of a hand appear in the upper left corner of the sheet.
Worked in graphite and chalk on toned paper, the drawing builds the collarbone, shoulders and hands through careful tonal modeling and visible construction lines, with the paper's own grey left bare for mid-tones. The restrained, academic handling and quiet pose give the study a still, contemplative concentration typical of a life-drawing session.
