About this work
A young woman sits facing forward with her hair pulled back, hands clasped together in her lap. She wears a short-sleeved robe or blouse patterned with a dense jumble of colored triangles, diamonds and stripes, while a lighter, similarly patterned fabric covers her legs. The plain beige paper ground is left bare around the figure.
Her face, hair and hands are rendered in soft graphite and charcoal shading, giving them a naturalistic, sculptural presence, while the garment explodes into flat, saturated color-pencil patchwork of yellow, blue, pink, green and orange.
