About this work

Snow covers a curved stone embankment with balustrade and steps descending toward the water, where pigeons forage on the trodden path. Ornate piers topped with globe finials and a lamppost line the railing, and a bare tree rises at left. Across the space a slender blue-and-white bell tower rises above bare trees, beside a long pale-yellow classical building with rows of windows.

Grays and pale blues dominate the snow and sky, set against soft ochre in the facade and muted rose in the bare branches. Overcast light is diffused and shadowless; loose, confident brushwork renders the crunched snow and architecture, giving a hushed, cold winter stillness.
