About this work
A narrow road blanketed in snow curves from the foreground toward a row of pollarded willows on the left, their branches capped with fresh snow. Two tire tracks cut through the untouched white surface, the only marks in the fields stretching to either side, framed by bare trunks silhouetted against a near-black sky.
The palette is reduced almost to monochrome, deep blue-blacks and warm greys against thick, loaded white impasto for the snow. Strong tonal contrast between dark trunks and luminous ground gives the composition a stark, graphic clarity, and the quiet, empty road lends the scene an austere, wintry stillness.
