About this work
A wooden window frame divides the composition into three panes: a frosted upper strip patterned with lace and crossed by leaf shadows, a lower-left pane holding a terracotta pot of red geranium blossoms among broad green leaves, and a lower-right pane where a white curtain is pulled aside to reveal a boy's face, only his eyes, brows and hairline showing above the sill, looking straight out.
Pale wood grain and crisp white lace are set against near-black interior shadow, with small accents of red flower and warm skin tone breaking the muted range. The wood, glass and fabric are rendered with tight, controlled realism, while the face is softly modeled, giving the whole a quiet, watchful, faintly mysterious feeling.
