About this work
A small cluster of kitchen vessels is arranged on a table against a plain light backdrop: a lidded ceramic jar, a glass demijohn-like bottle, a white ceramic pitcher, a gravy boat, a plain glass, and a few heads of garlic set in front. Everything is kept low and close together, filling the center of the composition.
The palette is almost entirely white, cream and gray, with only faint warm tints in the garlic and jug. Thick, visible strokes of paint build up the surfaces, especially in the mottled background, giving the objects a chalky, sculptural texture. Light is soft and diffuse, producing a calm, tonal study with little contrast.
