About this work
A weathered suitcase lies open on a plain grey floor, its lid thrown back to reveal a dark lining. Inside rest a blue-and-white striped sailor's collar draped over the edge, a tall dark bottle standing upright, a spiral seashell, and two dried starfish; a second small green bottle sits just outside the case on the floor.
Sharp diagonal beams of light rake across the suitcase's interior and the surrounding floor, casting long shadows and picking out the fibers of the fabric and the grain of the leather in near-photographic detail. The muted grey palette is broken only by the sailor's blue stripes, giving the scene a hushed, enigmatic air.
