About this work
A woman faces forward with a calm, symmetrical gaze, her face rendered smooth and pale against a heavily ornamented setting. She wears an elaborate crown-like headdress and voluminous scrolled ornaments spilling over her shoulders and down her arms, echoed by dense decorative patterning that fills the entire background in interlocking swirls and medallions.
Warm bronze, ochre and violet dominate a surface built from layered, almost embroidered texture rather than open brushwork. The flattened frontal pose and dense ornament give the image a still, hypnotic, dreamlike presence, more emblem than fleeting likeness.
