About this work
A large orange, its peel torn open to reveal pale pith and juicy flesh, fills the lower left of the composition, with a curl of rind lying before it. In the middle distance, three toy animals - a fox, a pale creature, and a brown bear - stand close together, facing the fruit under an open sky with trees along the horizon.
Bright daylight models the orange's dimpled skin in warm oranges and creamy whites with thick, tactile strokes, while the distant toys and pale ground are treated more softly. Cool blue sky and scattered clouds balance the fruit's warmth. The disproportionate scale between the huge orange and the small animals gives the scene a playful, storybook logic.
