About this work
The composition is filled almost entirely by the surface of a garden pond, its dark water broken by clusters of round lily pads and several open water lilies in white and blush pink. A stand of reeds and grasses lines the far edge at upper right, its reflection spreading across the water in soft vertical streaks, while a patch of pale, silvery light brightens the upper left corner.
The palette moves between cool violets and blues in the reflected water and warm greens and ochres in the pads, applied with loose, confident strokes that leave individual dabs of paint visible. Light falls unevenly across the pond, picking out some blossoms while letting others sink into shadow, giving the scene a quiet, contemplative stillness closer to plein-air impressionism than botanical illustration.
