About this work
A narrow city canal recedes toward a small arched footbridge, flanked by tall bare trees and rows of multi-story facades in pink, cream and ochre. Cars are parked along the near embankment, and two figures walk along the paved quay in the foreground, past a low stone parapet. Pale winter sky and thin clouds stretch overhead.
Cool blues and warm building tones alternate across the composition, with choppy, dabbed brushwork describing brick, stone and bare branches alike. Reflections of the facades ripple in the canal's still surface. Soft, even daylight and the leafless trees give the street a crisp, quiet stillness.
