About this work
A pale-skinned woman fills most of the composition, her voluminous white hair swept into two rounded forms and a red rectangular mask with cut eye-holes covering her eyes. A red sash crosses her bare chest, and her legs stretch toward the viewer, bare feet with red-painted nails, while her draped lower robe dissolves into the image of a Venetian building with balconies and arched windows.
A dark, roughly textured stone-grey ground surrounds the figure, throwing the ivory skin and cream-toned building into sharp relief, with the red mask and sash as the only strong color accents. Flat shapes and smooth skin tones set against the weathered architecture give the image a dreamlike, theatrical quality suited to a night of masquerade.
