About this work
A wide view spans a chateau estate at evening: a steep-roofed pavilion with a round window stands at left, a colonnaded facade topped with statues glows at center, and a lower wing with turrets extends to the right. A still moat mirrors the buildings in front, while clipped conical shrubs and a green lawn run across the foreground.
Warm yellow light catches the stonework and windows against a cool blue sky scattered with soft clouds, the contrast heightened by loose, energetic brushstrokes. Color is laid on in short, confident dabs, especially in the reflections and foliage, giving the scene a lively, sunlit shimmer typical of open-air painting. The mood is bright and tranquil, caught at day's end.
