About this work
A single large leaf, pale and bleached with only patches of ochre-yellow and rust-brown surviving near its stem end, fills nearly the whole square canvas. Its central vein and branching ribs are drawn in fine, dark lines, and its outer edges are torn, curled, and partly disintegrated. Behind it, the ground dissolves into soft, out-of-focus blotches of white, grey, and brown.
The leaf itself is built with careful, layered detail, its veining picked out in crisp strokes, while the background dissolves into loose, blurred dabs like a shallow depth of field. Cool greys and warm ochre play against each other, giving a quiet, intimate close-up study of a small, decaying piece of nature.
