About this work
A narrow canal, packed with moored motorboats in white, red and blue hulls, curves away toward a low arched bridge and rows of pastel apartment buildings. Autumn trees in yellow and orange line both banks, their branches meeting overhead, while a few pedestrians move along the embankment and cross the bridge in the distance.
The palette is cooled to greys, mauves and muted greens, with only the boats' hulls and scattered orange leaves breaking the damp tonality. Thick, choppy strokes of loaded paint describe water, foliage and stone alike, giving the whole surface a rough, weather-beaten texture that suits the overcast, drizzly mood of the scene.
