About this work
A tapering mass of stacked church facades, arched windows, rose windows and spires rises to a peak of pointed gables, echoing the form of a Gothic cathedral built from dozens of fused smaller buildings. Wisps of pale sky with faint blue patches surround the structure, and the lower edge dissolves into a rough, undefined ground.
Rendered almost entirely in soft greys, warm beiges and muted browns, the surface is built up with a thick, granular impasto that catches light unevenly across the carved-looking facades. The absence of strong color and the hazy, weathered texture give the imaginary cathedral a ghostly, timeworn quality, as if seen through fog or dust.
