About this work
One young woman sits on a low stool, dressed in a white blouse and a grey patterned wrap skirt, her hands folded in her lap as she looks downward with a pensive expression. Beside her a second woman stands with her back to the viewer, wearing a fitted black top and dark tights, her hair pinned up, gazing toward an unseen window. Both figures occupy a platform draped in rose-pink fabric, with a pair of discarded black shoes lying on the floor at the lower left.
Pale walls and the pink drape create a soft, muted backdrop against which the standing figure's black clothing reads as a strong dark silhouette. Brushwork is loose and economical, faces and hands more tightly resolved than the surrounding fabric, and diffuse daylight lends the scene an intimate, unposed studio quietness.
