About this work
Two nude figures stand side by side on a pale, washed ground; the left figure faces the viewer with arms crossed over the chest, hair piled loosely on top of the head, while the taller right figure turns away, back and shoulders wrapped in a mottled, densely painted cloak.
The palette stays within warm ochre, sand and grey, with pale blue washes bleeding down the background; thick impasto is built up and scraped with a palette knife, drips of paint run downward, and the loosely suggested forms give the scene a quiet, contemplative stillness.
