About this work
A bare-chested man stands frontally with arms spread wide and his head tipped back, mouth open as if crying out. He wears a tattered straw or feather headdress trimmed with red, and a cluster of small bells and ribbons hangs at his waist over loose light trousers; his raised arms dissolve into loose bundles of straw at the edges of the canvas.
The palette is built from warm ochres, browns and umbers scumbled over the canvas in broad dry strokes, with the figure's skin picked out in warmer flesh tones under a raking, theatrical light. Thick, gestural brushwork and a crucifixion-like pose give the image a charged, ritualistic intensity.
