About this work
A weathered green two-masted sailing vessel is docked along a stone embankment, its rigging and bare masts rising against a pale sky. Behind it a wide river bends past a hazy skyline of spires and rooftops, crossed by a low stone bridge; a lone pedestrian and bare young trees line the promenade in the foreground.
Cool grays and greens dominate, warmed by the flag's red-white-blue and touches of ochre on the hull. Loose, broken brushstrokes render the reflections and rigging with quick economy, while a soft overcast light flattens the distance into atmospheric haze, giving the scene a quiet, workaday calm.
