About this work
A grassy hillside scattered with pale, lichen-covered stones slopes down to a still lake filling the lower half of the canvas. Beyond the water, low wooded banks and a distant strip of sea recede toward the horizon, where a thin crescent moon hangs in the fading sky.
Warm olive and ochre greens in the grass give way to a pale rose-and-sage sky, the light diffuse and even as at dusk just after sunset. Brushwork stays smooth and blended in sky and water, more textured across the slope, producing a hushed, quietly contemplative mood.
