About this work
A hill town of closely packed houses and a tall bell tower climbs across the lower third of the canvas, terracotta and rust-toned roofs catching warm light while walls fall into cool shadow. Above, a vast sky of soft grey and white clouds fills most of the composition, breaking to a pale glow near the horizon.
Painted with loose, heavily loaded strokes and a palette-knife-like texture, the sky is built from soft blended greys against the more thickly impastoed ochre, rust and cream of the rooftops. Light falls low and warm across the town while the clouds stay cool and diffuse, giving an airy, atmospheric and calm overall effect.
