About this work
Two young men face off in the foreground, each gripping one end of a long gilded staff or rod with both hands in a straining contest, a loose stone caught in mid-air above them. Behind them a cloaked, grey-haired woman leans in with an arm outstretched as if trying to intervene, her face anxious. The ground is littered with scattered stones beneath a turbulent sky streaked with fire-orange light and dark smoke.
Flesh and fabric are modeled in strong chiaroscuro, with warm highlights on the straining arms and faces set against deep shadow and a lurid orange-black sky. The golden staff catches the brightest, warmest light in the composition, drawing the eye to the central struggle, while loose, painterly smoke in the background contrasts with the tightly rendered figures for a charged, dramatic effect.
