About this work
A solitary tree with a thick, knotted trunk and sprawling bare branches occupies the center of the canvas, standing in a dark plowed or furrowed field. A second, smaller tree is barely visible in the distant gloom to the left, and the horizon line is low, giving the main tree a monumental presence.
Deep indigo and near-black tones fill the sky and ground, against which the trunk is modeled in warm ochre and grey light and the thin branches are picked out in pale, luminous strokes that read almost like lightning against the darkness. The stark contrast and heavy shadow create an intense, almost eerie nocturnal mood.
