About this work

The composition is cropped tightly to two pale hands at the top, one gripping a small wooden cross-shaped control bar rigged with strings, the fingers of the other curled loosely beside it. Far below, a jointed wooden marionette kneels on all fours with its head lowered near a plain white sphere resting on the ground, its limbs bent and slack.

Painted almost entirely in black with the hands and puppet picked out in warm flesh and pale wood tones, the strings appear as thin scratched white lines connecting the two halves of the image. The stark tonal contrast and empty dark space between hands and figure give the scene an eerie, unsettling quality.
