About this work
Seen from behind, a bearded, barefoot man in a blue and red mantle kneels on rocky ground, one hand lifted toward a burning wall of fire that fills the left side of the canvas. Within the flames a serene, luminous face looks out at him, surrounded by an aureole of yellow and orange light.
Thick, gestural strokes of scarlet, orange and ochre are dragged and scraped across the canvas to suggest flame and heat haze, while the kneeling man is rendered more solidly in cool blues against the fire's warmth. The loose, turbulent handling and blazing color create an overwhelming, awe-struck intensity.
