About this work

A woman lies asleep on a narrow bed with a tubular metal frame, her head resting on an olive-green pillow. A bulky quilt patterned in green, blue, grey and yellow squares covers her body to the shoulder, one arm emerging to hold a small brown chestnut between thumb and fingers. A radio or small device hangs from the rail at the head of the bed.

The palette favors cool greys in wall and frame, against which the quilt's saturated greens and blues stand out. Loose, textured brushwork builds the fabric folds and the softly lit, relaxed face, while the metal bars are rendered flat and spare. The mood is quiet and still, a private moment of rest.
