About this work
Four figures in black, with grey, red, and blonde hair visible, bend forward in a receding diagonal line, each gripping a wooden marionette crossbar with strings running downward. Below them, three small jointed puppets crouch together on a ledge while, isolated near the bottom of the canvas, a fourth puppet lies collapsed on the floor, its pale round head knocked loose beside its body.
The picture is painted almost entirely in blacks and warm umbers, with light picking out hair, hands, and wooden joints against an undefined dark ground. Smooth, controlled brushwork and the fallen, damaged-looking puppet at the bottom give the composition a somber, unsettling undertone beneath its otherwise quiet surface.
