About this work
Two figures dressed in black lean close together against a black ground, heads bowed as they work two wooden marionette crossbars stacked one above the other. Strings run down from the controls to four small jointed wooden puppets with plain oval heads, grouped in two pairs that seem to float in the darkness beneath the puppeteers' hands.
The palette is restricted to warm flesh tones and coppery red hair against near-total black, with light falling softly across the faces and hands while the rest of the canvas dissolves into shadow. Smooth, controlled brushwork and the absence of any setting give the picture a quiet, introspective, faintly unsettling stillness centered on the act of controlling.
