About this work
Four figures dressed entirely in black stand in a diagonal line receding from a sharply lit young man in the foreground to three increasingly indistinct women in the background. Each holds a wooden cross-shaped marionette control, strings trailing down to jointed wooden puppets with blank, egg-shaped heads that stand on the floor beneath them, echoing the human poses at a smaller scale.
Painted almost entirely in near-black browns and warm flesh tones, the scene is lit from one side, so only faces, hands, and the pale puppet heads catch light, the rest dissolving into shadow. The tight, smooth brushwork and tenebristic contrast create a hushed, mysterious mood, as if the puppeteers themselves were being staged and watched.
