About this work
A dense mass of gothic towers and spires, their peaked roofs and traceried windows barely legible through haze, forms a single island rising straight out of the sea. Waves break in white foam against its base, while patches of glowing red and dark blue show through openings in the golden stonework.
Warm ochre and gold dominate the composition, softened by a hazy, almost smoky treatment that blurs architectural detail into a single glowing mass. The turbulent sea below is painted in cooler blue-green with heavy impasto foam, creating a mysterious, otherworldly contrast between the misty citadel and the restless water.
