About this work
Viewed from an elevated terrace with potted plants in the foreground, the scene looks along the river toward the ornate wing of a museum and a multi-arched stone bridge. Pleasure boats are moored below the quay while pedestrians, strollers and a cyclist move along the paved embankment on the right, shaded by a row of trees under a soft, overcast sky.
Cool greys, greens and muted blues dominate the palette, with small bright accents on the figures' clothing and the boats. Loose, quick strokes sketch in the crowd and cobbles, giving a sense of movement and everyday bustle along the river. The diffused light and elevated viewpoint create a calm, panoramic impression of the city at leisure.
