About this work
The canvas is dominated by a single weathered plane of rust and ochre brown, scored with thin scratched lines, small crosses and geometric fragments. Faint stenciled letters and numerals are scattered across the surface, some upright and some barely legible, reading more like markings left on an old wall or crate than a coherent inscription.
Built up in dry, dragged and sanded layers of brown, rust and off-white, the paint is treated almost like corroded metal or aged plaster, with scratches and stencils standing in for brushwork. The narrow, earthen palette and rough, worn texture give the piece a quiet, contemplative feel.
