About this work

A cluster of ripe tangerines, several still bearing green leaves and twigs, is piled inside and around a small dented metal pail set on an old wooden shelf; the fruit spills forward toward the viewer against a plain, near-black backdrop.

Warm orange skins and glossy green leaves are picked out by soft, even light against the dark background, while the tarnished metal of the pail is rendered in cool grey reflections that set off the fruit's saturated color. The simple, close grouping and smooth realistic finish give the study a quiet, homely warmth.
