About this work
A fortified monastery complex spans the middle distance, its whitewashed walls and towers enclosing clustered churches topped with dark onion domes and slender spires. Trees rise beside the walls, and the compound is set back from a marshy foreground of green grass and dark shrubs, with a strip of water in front reflecting the pale buildings and sky above.
Soft violet-grey clouds fill most of the sky, applied in broad smudged strokes of pastel that leave the architecture glowing pale blue and white by contrast. Greens and rust-reds in the grass are laid down in short, broken touches. The overall handling is loose and atmospheric rather than precise, giving the historic skyline a quiet, slightly overcast calm.
